The New Mexico Educational Retirement Board provides pensions for employees of the state's public schools and colleges, along with some state agency staff in educational programs. The system traces back to 1925, when the Legislature passed the state's first pension plan for public servants, which at first covered only university faculty. The board held its first meeting in March 1941 and was established by law in 1945. It pays its own operating costs from investment returns rather than state general fund money.
