I downgrade the Invesco Food & Beverage ETF to a Hold as I expect this ETF to underperform IVV into 2027. While the combination of macro stress factors looks partly similar to 2022, the core of the narrative is different, making defensive plays like PBJ tactically unattractive. PBJ delivers nothing particularly appealing in terms of the triad of "earnings resilience, GARP profile, and quality," making it prone to underperformance versus IVV.

August hiring rebounded sharply, boosting rate-hike bets. Here are a few ETFs that could benefit from resilient economic growth and shifting rate dynamics.

The State Street Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLP) offers a much lower expense ratio of 0.08% compared to 0.61% for Invesco Food & Beverage ETF (PBJ). XLP provides a higher dividend yield and has historically delivered stronger total returns over five years.

The U.S. consumer remains resilient enough to support earnings growth, but that resilience is increasingly concentrated. The LSEG U.S. Retail and Restaurant Q2 earnings index, which tracks changes in the growth rate of earnings within the sector, is expected to show a 67.0% growth over last year's levels. Of the 185 retailers tracked by LSEG, the Broadline Retail sector, representing a wide variety of consumer goods, is headed for the highest earnings growth rate in the second quarter, recording a 231.1% surge over last year's level.

The Fidelity MSCI Consumer Staples Index ETF offers a lower expense ratio and a higher dividend yield than the Invesco Food & Beverage ETF. The Invesco Food & Beverage ETF targets a concentrated basket of 31 stocks, while the Fidelity MSCI Consumer Staples Index ETF provides broader exposure with 104 holdings.

iShares U.S. Consumer Staples ETF offers a lower expense ratio and a higher dividend yield than Invesco Food & Beverage ETF. Invesco Food & Beverage ETF maintains a concentrated portfolio focused on the food supply chain while the iShares fund covers a broader staples universe.

The Fidelity MSCI Consumer Staples Index ETF (FSTA) carries a significantly lower expense ratio of 0.08% compared to the 0.61% charged by Invesco Food & Beverage ETF (PBJ). PBJ maintains a concentrated portfolio of 31 holdings, while FSTA offers broader exposure with 98 positions.

Invesco Food & Beverage ETF earns a 'hold' rating due to persistent long-term underperformance and quality concerns despite improved near-term growth metrics. PBJ's 11.49% next-year EPS growth and 13.76x forward P/E create a compelling GARP profile, but quality and debt remain key risks. High portfolio turnover and a quant model not tailored to consumer staples drive volatility and inconsistent factor exposures.

Invesco Food & Beverage ETF manages significantly more assets and has a longer operational history than First Trust Nasdaq Food & Beverage ETF First Trust Nasdaq Food & Beverage ETF provides a higher dividend yield but has experienced greater historical volatility Both funds concentrate heavily on the consumer defensive sector and share identical holdings counts

The LSEG Retail/Restaurant Index reported Q1 2026 earnings growth of 27.2%. Retail earnings in the first quarter of 2026 received a significant boost from a historic tax refund season, reinforcing consumer spending at a time when the labor market remained resilient. Q2 2026 earnings are currently expected to mark the weakest growth rate of the year, with consensus forecasts calling for a gradual improvement during the second half of the year.
