If you own a US total market fund and call yourself diversified, the math says otherwise.

Warren Buffett is not fully out of the picture and has an indirect stake in a secret portfolio that gives him exposure to the iShares Core MSCI EAFE ETF (BATS:IEFA), Vanguard High Dividend Yield ETF (NYSEARCA:VYM), and iShares Core MSCI International Developed Markets ETF (NYSEARCA:IDEV).

The name Warren Buffett has become interchangeable with Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRK-B ).

The iShares Core MSCI International Developed Markets ETF invests in developed markets outside the United States, mainly Japan, the UK, and Canada. IDEV has outperformed the SPY so far in 2025, benefitting from lower valuations and a weak U.S. dollar. I estimate that countries in which IDEV invests will deliver GDP growth of 1.05% in 2025, only marginally below the U.S. at 1.4%.

The iShares Core MSCI International Developed Markets ETF tracks developed market equities outside the US, mostly in Japan, the UK, and Canada. IDEV holdings trade at a circa 2% earnings yield discount relative to the S&P 500 and offer a higher dividend yield. GDP growth expectations for IDEV holdings are only 0.7% weaker than the US, indicating the discount is excessive.

US large-cap Tech momentum may shift to international markets. Consider iShares Core MSCI International Developed Markets ETF for diversified exposure. The IDEV ETF holds 2,224 well-diversified companies across 20 countries, with a low expense ratio and balanced sector allocations.

iShares Core MSCI International Developed Markets ETF has underperformed the S&P 500 due to its low exposure to the information technology sector. IDEV has not fully recovered from its low in October 2022, while the S&P 500 has surpassed its previous peak. IDEV's low exposure to the technology sector and its inferior returns make it less attractive compared to the S&P 500.
