Long-duration Treasuries finally offer an enticing yield, but several less obvious risks could undermine both the income and the hedge. Covered call ETFs share more with fixed income than most investors realize, and today's environment is paying them more for that role. The biggest, most popular covered call funds may fail exactly when defense is needed most.

Not all dividend ETFs are built alike, and three funds targeting companies with decades of unbroken payout increases take wildly different approaches to turning that streak into returns for shareholders.

Explore five popular dividend ETFs offering yields above 4%, including high-income and option-based strategies for volatile markets.

FT Vest S&P 500 Dividend Aristocrats Target Income ETF is downgraded to a hold due to lackluster valuation and technicals. KNG offers a high 8.5% yield via a buy-write strategy but underperforms both the S&P 500 and the NOBL ETF. The ETF is overweight Consumer Staples and underweight Information Technology, lagging in the current tech-led market.

Equity markets remain in a prolonged, robust bull run, demanding high selectivity for new opportunities. Infra and utility sectors are heavily dependent on AI, while energy and midstream appear overinflated due to war-related factors. High-duration assets are considered excessively risky in the current environment, favoring cash preservation instruments like high-quality CLOs and T-bills.

We have entered a market regime highly favorable for covered call strategies, driven by elevated volatility and reduced upside potential. Investors seeking yield should be mindful of opportunity costs and balance their covered call exposure to avoid underperformance in both price and income. Less aggressive covered call instruments, focusing on yield stability or growth, can offer premium benefits and mitigate opportunity costs.

The Dividend Aristocrats index has always been a narrow club. Companies need at least 25 consecutive years of dividend increases to qualify for the S&P 500 version, and the roster of ETFs built to own only these stocks is even shorter.

Covered call ETFs have pulled in billions of dollars over the past few years, and most of that money has funneled into a small group of large-cap products tied to the S&P 500 or Nasdaq-100.

Income investors, who apply a buy-and-hold strategy, inevitably run into the problem of divergent yield on cost vs. actual portfolio yield. If the idea is to never sell and the portfolio has appreciated, then the key issue is that each reinvestment dollar generates less and less incremental income. Target yield instrument can be used to solve this issue.
