Most index funds hand the biggest companies the biggest stakes, but three ETFs tear up that rulebook and each uses a completely different formula to decide who wins a spot and how much of your money they get.

The S&P 500 slid 1.95%, capping off its worst weekly showing since late June. Key Takeaways The S&P 500 fell nearly 2% for the week, its worst since the week of June 26.

The S&P 500's record highs mask severe market fragility: record diesel prices, 20-year-high Treasury yields, and AI-driven cash burn threaten the index's narrow leadership. Big Tech's aggressive AI capex is outpacing free cash flow, with hyperscalers projected to run $215–315 billion annual deficits by 2027, raising credit risk and bond market stress. Policy interventions—such as G7 diesel reserve releases—can rapidly shift market pressure, but underlying risks from high input costs and weak breadth remain unresolved.

The current market breadth within the S&P 500, while it's near all-time highs, is historically unusual. This signal last flashed during the peak of the tech bubble.

AI's public-image problem and bubble concerns are growing. Here are four defensive ETFs offering quality, diversification and income.
