FFLC: The 2022 Outperformance Is Hiding An Important Detail
Recent "buy" ratings on the Fidelity Fundamental Large Cap Core ETF (FFLC), an active large-cap core ETF from Fidelity, appear to overlook the fund's rebranding and strategy change in February 2024. Nearly all of FFLC's relative outperformance versus SPY can be explained by a strong 2022, a year in which the fund overweighted Energy and underweighted Technology. FFLC is no longer a "New Millennium" ETF, and while there are some allocation differences among top stocks like Amazon and Alphabet, it doesn't feature any fundamental advantage over SPY.

FFLC: Active Management That Has Actually Beaten The S&P 500
Fidelity Fundamental Large Cap Core ETF offers a refined, actively managed alternative to S&P 500 funds, emphasizing risk-adjusted returns and fundamental strength. FFLC excludes high-valuation, low-profitability names, focusing on large-cap leaders with durable cash flows and reasonable forward P/E ratios. The fund has outperformed S&P 500 peers since inception, particularly during downturns, and features moderate technology exposure and modest international diversification.
