Retiring on dividends can help you weather market crashes without selling shares. However, three major risks can still derail your retirement. I detail what these are and how to mitigate them.

Your bills arrive monthly but most dividend stocks pay quarterly, leaving a two-month gap that forces constant budgeting decisions. Four ETFs draw income from options strategies, preferred shares, and Treasury bills to fill that gap on a retiree's schedule.

Your bills arrive on a fixed schedule, but your dividend ETFs pay whenever they feel like it. Three monthly-paying funds with staggered payment windows can turn that chaos into something that actually resembles a paycheck.

Many investors are growing increasingly complacent. I detail three very big mistakes that I am seeing a lot of investors make right now. I discuss why bonds may be riskier than they seem, historically cheap-looking high-yield securities may not be nearly as undervalued as they seem, and many investors are overpaying for outperformers.

High-yielding investments that pay out cash flow monthly can be powerful passive income machines. When they are on sale and have a track record of total return outperformance, they are even more compelling. I detail two of these opportunities that are on sale right now.

A Qualified Charitable Distribution can wipe your RMD off your tax return entirely, but it also kills the income you were counting on. Three ETFs can rebuild that cash flow, and they each do it a completely different way.

That friendly cardigan-clad spokesman on TV never says the word debt, but a reverse mortgage is exactly that, and the paid-off house you worked 30 years to own deserves a closer look before you hand over the deed.

Retirees face a challenging trade-off: higher-yielding assets sacrifice growth or add risk, while core dividend ETFs like SCHD now yield only ~3%. Relying solely on high-yield ETFs (PFF, HYG, JEPQ) exposes portfolios to credit risk, limited income growth, or capped upside, complicating sustainable income generation. A core & satellite approach—anchoring with SCHD-like holdings and selectively adding midstream (AMLP) and BDCs (BIZD) can enhance yield while managing risk.

The problem to solve is simple and brutal. A survivor annuity election is usually locked in: you either accept a smaller benefit in exchange for lifetime coverage on both spouses, or take the larger single-life check and accept that it ends with the pension holder.

Turning 73 changes the math on your retirement account. The IRS no longer lets your traditional IRA compound in peace.
