Having launched on January 11, 2024, spot Bitcoin (BTC) exchange-traded funds (ETFs) turned 1,000 days old in October 2026 and have, by press time, collectively become the biggest BTC holders in the world.

Bitcoin's sudden rebound in August has reignited investor interest in crypto ETFs. Single-crypto ETFs that target just a single cryptocurrency remain the most popular choice for investors.

As Bitcoin (BTC) added more than $310 billion to its market capitalization over the past 30 days, reaching $1.57 trillion on September 14, Morgan Stanley (NYSE: MS) through its spot exchange-traded fund (ETF), Morgan Stanley Bitcoin Trust (MSBT), has been on a buying spree.

The state of the crypto ETF market and a remarkable ETF growth story headlined this week's ETF Prime. Host Nate Geraci welcomed Roxanna Islam, head of sector and industry research at VettaFi, followed by Robert Hum of SEI.

Bitcoin's rebound above $69,000, strong ETF inflows and a more supportive macro backdrop could offer fresh upside for Bitcoin ETFs.

Morgan Stanley Bitcoin Trust ETF earns a Buy rating due to its integration with Morgan Stanley's vast advisor network and wealth-management platform. MSBT's 0.14% expense ratio is the lowest among spot Bitcoin ETFs, but scale from advisor adoption, not fees, will drive its economics. Early inflows surpassed $400 million, mostly from self-directed investors; meaningful advisor allocation could rapidly multiply AUM and revenue.

On July 28, Morgan Stanley launched two new spot crypto ETFs on NYSE Arca. The Morgan Stanley Ethereum Trust (MSSE) and the Morgan Stanley Solana Trust (MSOL) provide spot price exposure to underlying ethereum (ETH) and solana (SOL), alongside additional distributions from staking yields.

The top ETF launches of the past decade were the focus on this week's ETF Prime. Host Nate Geraci and Cynthia Murphy, director of research at VettaFi, counted down the 10 most successful debuts by current assets.

Issuers are still driving forward with crypto launches, with around 30 new products already launched so far in 2026. Understandably, net flows across the broader asset class have been weak due to pressured spot prices.

Spot Bitcoin ETFs have unlocked regulated, institutional-grade access to Bitcoin, holding around $98 billion in total assets and accelerating mainstream adoption.
