US Bancorp is the parent company of U.S. Bank, which provides banking, investment, mortgage, trust and payment services to individuals, businesses, governments and other financial institutions. It traces its founding to 1863 and First National Bank of Cincinnati, whose national charter it still operates under. Its present form dates to 2001, when Firstar Corporation of Milwaukee bought the earlier U.S. Bancorp, a holding company that began in Oregon in 1969, and the merged company took that name. In 2022 it completed the purchase of MUFG Union Bank's consumer business, which gave it a large presence on the West Coast, especially in California.
