Artificial intelligence is the headline-grabbing technology story today, but in the background, you'll hear the term quantum computing. Quantum computing could dramatically increase the computing power available to the world.

The quantum computing investment thesis is relatively young, and its related stocks embraced at a fever pitch by some retail investors. Perhaps that explains its often dramatic emotional swings, both positive and negative.

After a dismal November in which shares plunged by more than 38%, D-Wave Quantum Inc. NYSE: QBTS is leaving investors focused on quantum computing wondering whether the worst is still yet to come. Signs across the industry don't look promising, with rivals Rigetti Computing NASDAQ: RGTI and IonQ Inc. NYSE: IONQ dropping by 42% and 21%, respectively, over the last month as well.

Quantum computing stocks have been on a tear in recent months, and while the rally has cooled down in recent days, many still see it as a golden ticket to multibagger gains.
