A federal jury in Waco, Texas said on Thursday ​that Japanese chipmaker Kioxia owes satellite-communications company Viasat $229 ‌million for infringing a patent covering computer memory technology, according to a court ​document.

Viasat shares VSAT surged 10% on Tuesday, extending Monday's 23% rally as investors continued to react to a series of defense contract wins, growing optimism in the satellite sector, and a bullish analyst outlook. The stock has drawn increased attention following multiple US Space Force awards that strengthen its position in secure satellite communications.

VSAT's secure satellite communications, mission-critical networking and cybersecurity tools position it to benefit as defense operations depend on digital connectivity.

ViaSat stock rocketed higher after the announcement Rocket Lab would buy Iridium. There could be further gains in store.

Rocket Lab is buying Iridium in an $8 billion merger deal. Viasat will now have to compete with a bigger Rocket Lab that owns its own spectrum.

The many space stocks that rocketed higher ahead of the SpaceX IPO earlier this month have since fallen back down to earth. On average, these stocks were up 99% year-to-date at the close on June 11th when SpaceX priced its shares at $135. Along with SpaceX still being up 14.5% from its IPO price, just one other stock out of 28 is up since the SPCX IPO.

ViaSat and Iridium have racked up huge gains on expectations they can sell their valuable spectrum but the clock is ticking.

Global defense budgets are undergoing a significant reallocation. Capital that historically flowed into terrestrial armor and traditional naval assets is rapidly moving upward.
