PVAL: How Putnam's ETF Stacks Up Against CGDV, VFLO, And Other Leading Value Funds

The Putnam Focused Large Cap Value ETF (PVAL) is a top-performing large-cap value ETF with a 15.92x forward P/E and a 10% next-year EPS growth rate. This article evaluates it alongside CGDV, AVLV, SEIV, VFLO, and IWD. PVAL earns credit for its consistently strong returns. A high cumulative total return is admirable, but PVAL has outperformed its benchmark in every calendar year since its launch. Current fundamentals support this track record continuing. This article closely evaluates PVAL at the fundamental level, highlighting its strong sector balance and nice distribution of low- and high- P/E stocks.

Putnam Converts Focused U.S. Research Strategy to ETF Structure

More conversions to exchange-traded funds (ETFs) from mutual funds continue to underscore the preference of the ETF as the investment vehicle of choice. Last week, Putnam Investments completed the conversion of its mutual fund strategy into the Putnam Focused U.S. Research ETF (PFRX).

PAVL: The Result Of Value With A Tech Tilt

The Putnam Focused Large Cap Value ETF (PVAL) is an actively managed value ETF that has drifted toward mega-cap tech, with Information Technology now its top sector at 20.70% of assets. Despite its value label, PVAL has outperformed the Russell 1000 Value for four straight years while maintaining lower volatility and stronger Sharpe and Sortino ratios. Microsoft, Apple, and Amazon together make up 18.20% of the fund, reflecting a shift away from its stated value mandate toward growth-style holdings.

PVAL: How Putnam's $11.3 Billion Active Value ETF Keeps Punching Above Its Weight

I am upgrading Putnam Focused Large Cap Value ETF from 'hold' to 'buy' after it delivered a 36.66% total return since October 2024. PVAL stands out for its strong momentum, robust medium-term earnings growth (21.82% EPS CAGR), and effective risk control via sector diversification and mixed-beta positions. Despite a forward P/E of 15.36x and some quality concerns, PVAL's portfolio construction and active management have produced superior risk-adjusted returns versus peers and SPY.

Growth continues to be a standout performer, though elevated interest rates and geopolitical friction continue to add a dose of uncertainty. With that, value exposure is still a vital component for constructing a balanced portfolio.

PVAL: The Value ETF With An Unusual Edge

Putnam Focused Large Cap Value ETF delivers best-in-class, risk-adjusted returns through active, high-conviction stock selection in the large-cap value space. PVAL's edge lies in targeting undervalued stocks with superior future cash flow growth, supported by experienced managers and a robust analyst team. Despite a 0.55% expense ratio and low 1% yield, PVAL consistently outperforms value peers and even the S&P 500, with lower drawdowns and strong historical CAGR.

Structural Shift or Recency Bias? Decoding Value's Mixed Signals in 2026

Value investors may be facing a conviction crisis. Despite leading in performance so far in 2026, value ETFs have struggled to consistently gather assets, with some funds picking up significant net new money while others are bleeding just as much.

PVAL: Cautiously Optimistic Owing To Recent Outperformance, Factor Mix, Buy Rating Maintained

Putnam Focused Large Cap Value ETF is an ANT ETF favoring underappreciated large-cap names. PVAL has an impressive performance track record, as it has beaten IVV since inception by more than 27%. Also, it has outmaneuvered the S&P 500 index since my November article. PVAL's historical risk metrics (including downside capture) support a hypothesis that it should do much better than the market and other value ETFs in the current market environment.

This value-stock strategy has trounced the S&P 500 for nearly five years

An investor may expect a value-oriented stock strategy to be less risky and less lucrative over the long term than the S&P 500 or a growth index.
