About: Originally established as Prudential Mutual Assurance, Investment, and Loan Association in 1848, Prudential plc has moved on a lot since then. Set up to sell life insurance and loans to the middle and then the industrializing and urbanizing working classes, the company subsequently diversified into Europe and then North America with the purchase of Jackson National Life in around 1985. During its time as owner of Jackson, Prudential focused on building out a simple chassis-style product portfolio where customers could choose a variety of add-ons. The company also became renowned for its focus on building requisite internal capabilities to support its strong product offerings, including compelling technology and a large and well-trained wholesale sales.

Just how far Prudential's income credentials stretch?
UBS expects Prudential PLC (LSE:PRU) to increase its dividend and share buybacks to about 65% of the company's free cash flow available for shareholders, but says a payout higher than this is unlikely. This payout ratio represents the portion of Prudential's surplus cash that the company can safely return to investors without risking its financial stability.

Prudential: Still Attractive Valuation Despite Recent Share Price Run
Prudential remains undervalued, trading below embedded value, with the market applying a negative multiple to the new business profits despite its strong Asian franchise. If PUK's new business multiple re-rates to just 0x, shares could see 12% upside, with further gains from ongoing new business profit growth. If it further re-rates to be in line with the regional peer, AIA, the upside could be as significant as almost 50%.
