US equities surged to fresh record levels on renewed optimism that the conflict in the Middle East could move toward a resolution. The S&P 500 rose 0.5%, edging above its previous late-January peak, while the Nasdaq 100 advanced 0.7% as technology stocks continued to lead gains.

Just eight days ago, International Energy Agency Chief Fatih Birol declared the world was facing the largest energy supply disruption in modern history.

The S&P 500 closed at a new record high Wednesday, its first ​since the U.S.-Iran conflict began, as hopes of a de-escalation in ‌the war and robust earnings expectations drew investors back into risk assets.

For the past six months, it was my assessment that conditions suggested that short-term treasuries should be thought of as the default opportunity cost. However, I have changed my view on this. Given the culmination of events in recent weeks, I think we have emerged into a more “normal” period.

The broader benchmark S&P 500 fell nearly 8% at its lows amid the Iran War. Geopolitical wars make things very unpredictable.
