Commodity ETFs: Beyond the Gold Trade

Gold has traditionally been one of the most popular ways for investors to gain commodity exposure, but its recent weakness highlights the differences across various commodities. While precious metals have struggled, energy and certain agricultural commodities have seen stronger returns.

Commodity ETFs: Beyond the Gold Trade

Staying Bullish On The HGER ETF

The Harbor Commodity All-Weather Strategy ETF remains in a strong bullish trend, reaching new all-time highs in August and September 2026. HGER is heavily weighted toward oil products (38.2%) and gold (30.6%), with diversified exposure to agriculture and base metals. I reiterate my Buy rating on HGER, citing bullish commodity fundamentals, geopolitical tensions, inflation, and robust Seeking Alpha grades.

HGER: Take Advantage Of The Gold Breakout Via This ETF

Harbor Commodity All-Weather Strategy ETF remains a 'Buy' after delivering a +38% total return and tripling S&P 500 performance year-to-date. HGER's dynamic quant-driven portfolio is heavily weighted toward gold (33.5%) and petroleum (34.3%), creating an embedded hedge against macroeconomic volatility. The ETF's quarterly rebalancing, proprietary factor model, and focus on minimizing roll costs have driven consistent outperformance versus static commodity peers.

Q2 2026 In Commodities And Upgrading The HGER ETF To Buy Due To Key Drivers

Harbor Commodity All-Weather Strategy ETF is upgraded from Hold to Buy following a Q2 correction, reflecting renewed bullishness on commodities. HGER outperformed the commodity composite in H1 2026, rising 18.2% versus the composite's 4.16% gain, despite a 5.4% Q2 decline. Key bullish drivers for HGER include persistent inflation, fiat currency devaluation, geopolitical uncertainty, and favorable commodity market structure.

HGER: An "All Weather" Strategy On Commodities That I Thought Didn't Exist

Harbor Commodity All-Weather Strategy ETF (HGER) employs a unique, rules-based active strategy, emphasizing quality scoring and economic significance for commodity weighting. HGER's current tactical overweight to precious metals and petroleum reflects its mechanical response to a 'debasement' regime and recent market dynamics. While HGER has outperformed peers like PDBC, BCI, and FTGC, its volatility, driven by petroleum exposure, remains a material risk.
