Crypto equity ETFs (or blockchain ETFs) were once one of the main ways to access the crypto theme in an ETF wrapper. That changed after the January 2024 approval of spot bitcoin ETPs, which gave investors a simpler and more direct way to express a bitcoin view.

Michael Saylor's Bitcoin strategy has attracted plenty of fanfare. Basically, MicroStrategy ( NASDAAQ:MSTR ) borrows money to buy more Bitcoin.

For ETF investors, the onslaught of crypto ETF launches has created some short-sighted excitement. The spot bitcoin ETF launch, in particular, contributed to some buzz around rising bitcoin prices that seemed to cloud the long-term growth drivers of the industry.
