About: General Motors Co. emerged from the bankruptcy of General Motors Corp. (old GM) in July 2009. GM has eight brands and operates under three segments: GM North America, GM International, and GM Financial. The United States now has four brands instead of eight under old GM. The company regained its US market share leadership in 2022, after losing it to Toyota due to the chip shortage in 2021. 2024's share was 17.0%. The Cruise autonomous vehicle arm, which GM now owns outright, previously operated driverless geofenced AV robotaxi services in San Francisco and other cities, but after a 2023 accident, GM decided that it will focus on personal AVs. GM Financial became the company's captive finance arm in 2010 via the purchase of AmeriCredit.

What Caused GM's Dramatic 35% Drop in Net Income?
The market might be slow to realize it, but General Motors (GM 0.71%) has been doing a lot of things right over the past few years. GM has invested in its core portfolio of vehicles, returned value to shareholders through massive buyback programs, and gained market share over its competitors, all while keeping margin-eroding incentives in check.

General Motors: Ignore The Tariff Noise, Strong Buy
GM beat Q2 expectations on Tuesday, but shares fell 8% due to tariff concerns and a decline in core earnings. I see tariff headwinds as a short-term risk only as GM maintained strong free cash flow and confirmed its FY 2025 guidance, making the sell-off a buying opportunity. The U.S. and Japan just announced a major trade deal that could help ease investor concerns about the impact of tariffs.
