A trio of emerging economic forces could boost global production of electric vehicles with implications for oil, power and metal markets, a ​report from Wood Mackenzie said on Thursday.

Edmunds trade-in data showed a 5% jump in people trading gas cars for new and used EVs for the first 4 months of 2026. The rise has happened as gas prices have climbed 40% since April 2025, according to AAA.

U.S. House lawmakers proposed bipartisan legislation that would require electric vehicles to ​pay a $130 fee to pay for road repairs annually and $35 for some ‌plug-in hybrid models.

Xiaomi is emerging as a standout, rapidly scaling EV sales and maintaining strong momentum despite being a newcomer and not an EV pure-play.

With nearly 70% of global rare earth production and more than 90% of processing taking place in China, the world remains heavily reliant on the country for rare earth element supplies. Rare earth elements are a group of 17 minerals, including neodymium, dysprosium and lanthanum, which are used for various applications.
