Cryptocurrency market participants are revisiting Bitcoin, among others, to start 2026. Could that trend evolve to encompass some of the more credible altcoins?

The battle between crypto platforms is no longer about one blockchain winning everything. Instead, different networks are claiming dominance in specialized verticals, with Ethereum cementing its role as institutional infrastructure while Solana captures the consumer payments layer, according to CoinShares' 2026 outlook.

The altcoin ETF launched in October 2025 and holds exchange-traded products tracking Layer 1 protocols including Solana, Avalanche, and Cardano.

When bitcoin sneezes, altcoins often catch a cold or worse. For many altcoins, that's exactly the scenario that's playing across more than two months of bitcoin volatility and retrenchment.

The launch of multi-token crypto products (i.e., crypto index ETFs) signals that many issuers believe the next growth phase in crypto ETFs will be driven by investors who want a rules-based basket approach rather than single asset calls.

Spend enough time following the cryptocurrency universe and any investor is apt to come away thinking it's always “alts season.” Indeed, there's no shortage of clarion calls proclaiming now is the time for digital currencies that aren't bitcoin or stable coins to deliver big gains.

The CoinShares Altcoins ETF (DIME) has attracted $3.08 million in flows since its October launch, offering investors a regulated pathway to access alternative cryptocurrencies that now represent more than 40% of the digital asset market. According to the fund's prospectus, DIME provides equal-weighted exposure to 10 Layer 1 blockchain protocols.

For many crypto investors, it's fine to focus on bitcoin and ethereum. After all, those two assets combine for nearly $2.7 trillion of the crypto universe's total market capitalization of $3.75 trillion.

Markets move fast, and in the ETF corner of the world, sometimes it feels like it's practically impossible to keep up. Product development and proliferation have been so intense in recent months.
