Lilly Endowment Portfolio holdings
Lilly Endowment is a private family foundation, funded since 1937 with gifts of stock in the drugmaker Eli Lilly and Company, that gives to community development, education and religion. It is a separate organization from the drugmaker, which Col. Eli Lilly started in Indianapolis in 1876. Eli Lilly stock remains a financial bedrock for the Endowment, which has its own governing board and staff. The idea came from Eli Lilly, who proposed it to his father, J.K. Lilly Sr., and his younger brother, J.K. Lilly Jr., and the three are regarded as its founders. Its grants reach across the United States, especially in religion, but it keeps a special commitment to Indianapolis and Indiana, the founders' hometown and home state. Early recipients included the Children's Museum of Indianapolis, Wabash College and Earlham College.
