Fifth Third Bancorp is the holding company for Fifth Third Bank, whose odd name comes from the 1908 merger of Fifth National Bank and Third National Bank. Legend has it that the order was chosen over "Third Fifth" because, with prohibition ideas gaining ground, that could have sounded like three fifths of alcohol. The bank traces its roots to the Bank of the Ohio Valley, started by William W. Scarborough in 1858 and taken over by Third National Bank in 1871. Fifth Third bought MB Financial in 2018 and merged with Comerica Bank in February 2026.
