BlackRock Portfolio holdings
BlackRock is an asset manager that runs the iShares family of exchange-traded funds. It was founded in 1988 by Larry Fink, a mortgage-bond pioneer at First Boston, and several colleagues, to manage money for institutions with a focus on risk. Blackstone backed the start-up in exchange for a stake in its bond business, and the two parted ways in 1994. BlackRock went public in 1999 and merged with the investment managers division of Merrill in 2006. BlackRock bought the iShares business from Barclays in 2010 and the private credit manager HPS Investment Partners in 2025. It also sells technology: its Aladdin platform gives institutional investors tools for portfolio management, risk analysis, trading and accounting, and its BlackRock Solutions unit, launched in 2000, advises on risk management.
