Barclays Portfolio holdings
Barclays is a British universal bank whose roots go back to 1690, when the Quakers John Freame and Thomas Gould started a goldsmith banking business in London. The Barclays name came into the business in 1736, when James Barclay, son-in-law of founder John Freame, became a partner. Barclays launched the UK's first credit card, Barclaycard, in 1966, and in 1967 put the world's first cash machine in a branch in Enfield. In 2008 Barclays bought the North American operations of Lehman Brothers, and in 2009 it sold its Barclays Global Investors unit, home of the iShares ETFs, to BlackRock. It runs five divisions: UK consumer banking, UK corporate banking, private banking and wealth management, an investment bank and a US consumer bank.
